EVERY DAY A VISITOR - excerpt

GROSSMAN: I had a dream last night that i met Sam and George. They lived in my building. We played together almost every day. They were brothers, Sam a year older than me, George a year younger. We played what we called the imagination game. Like one would be king of the air, one king of the sea, one king of the earth. Things like that. We just walked and talked. It was so much fun. Come to think of it, it was sort of like this game. Strange...that never occurred to me. They moved when I was ten. I haven't seen them in seventy years. But in my dream I met Sam in the street. We were both boys again. I looked into his face and he into mine. And then we both cried. And cried and cried and cried. I was the baby in my family. How did I get so old?
